Abstract: | Introduction: Obesity is defined as an abnormal excessive accumulation of fat that can be detrimental to health, furthermore it is considered a multifactorial disease because it is the result of the interaction between genetic, behavioral and environmental factors. The rs11279109 (ins/del) polymorphism of the APOB gene has a physiological significance, since it involves the addition/deletion of 3 amino acids in the signal peptide of a gene that plays a central or an extremely important role in lipid metabolism. Objective: To evaluate the genetic association of the rs11279109 polymorphism of the Apolipoprotein B (APOB) gene with the risk of developing obesity. Methodology: The sample consisted of two groups, a study group of 105 obese individuals and a control group of 98 normal-weight individuals. Genomic DNA extraction was performed by the modified Bunce method, and genotyping was performed by PCR methodology. Results and Conclusions: Obese individuals presented significantly increased concentrations of total cholesterol, postprandial triglycerides at 2 and 4 hours, atherogenic indexes, fasting insulin and HOMA, however, HDL-c concentrations presented a statistically significant decrease compared to the control group. Individuals carrying the rs11279109 del allele of the APOB gene polymorphism have an increased risk of developing obesity, insulin resistance and fat intolerance. |
