Abstract: The Canadian province of Alberta declared provincial syphilis outbreaks in 2016 and again in 2019. By 2022, the province reported more than 3,300 cases of infectious syphilis, with a rate 18 times higher than in 2014 pre-outbreak. A significant proportion of diagnosed cases included congenital syphilis born to predominantly Indigenous women who had not accessed prenatal care, and to heterosexual persons engaging in illicit drug use. This presentation will describe a multi-year project to address this public health crisis by validating and implementing a dual HIV/syphilis rapid test kit in sexually transmitted infections (STI) clinics across the province.
